When my children were born, I looked into their innocent eyes and realized, “There are people on this earth who love you before even meeting you. But some people already hate you”. This reality check was how I saw our polarized world. A realization of systemic hatred because of nationality, social status, or culture. To hate a newborn for what they already represent is one of the saddest attributes of today’s, “Us vs. Them” society. In my early teens, I was told, “Only believe half of what you see, and none of what you hear”. But the need to declare loyalty to one side is nonetheless expected at all level’s of society, along the lines of, “If you’re not with us then you’re against us!”

Older generations indoctrinate the innocent with stories. The undercurrent of these tales often polarizes society into two groups: friends and foes. It begins in the home, then on our streets, and then continues throughout our careers. My silent reaction is always to ask, “Did they do anything to me?”

I grew up in a small town in Canada at a time when racial tensions didn’t exist. At least nothing that I personally experienced. There was ethnic diversity but no one seemed to care. One day an exchange student arrived from South Africa. He to told me stories of the extreme violence, and racial segregation in his country. He introduced me to “Apartheid” for the first time. The year was 1985 and he told me of a man named, Nelson Mandela. The exchange student opened my eyes to the racial inequality in his country. He was seeing Canada from the contrasting perspective of violence in South Africa. Our conversation was forever imprinted in me. It would take five more years before Mandela would be released from prison and 25-years of incarceration.

I eventually visited South Africa and gained friendships that I cherish to this day. I visited the shanty towns of Cape Town. I also visited Sun City, which was popularized by a song of the same name and released in the same year I met the exchange student. Sun City was created exclusively for international delegates to hide the injustices of the South African apartheid regime. The protest song was written by Steven Van Zandt and recorded by Artists United Against Apartheid to boycott their concerts in South Africa. This brought awareness in the West to the façade that Sun City represented as a symbol of racial segregation.

As I held my children I knew I didn’t want to be a parent who propagated hatred. I realized that eventually I would need to show them the injustices of the world. Whether they’re judged as privileged, infidel, or simply by the color of their skin, they would need to understand their reality and learn to protect themselves and their family.
