We’re born, raised, and die in the economic layer where we feel we belong. We educate and find jobs in our layer. We socialize only in that layer. We raise our children in our layer.

One way to define socioeconomic layers is by economically separating society by: people who live in huts vs. apartments vs. houses vs. mansions vs. islands. But I prefer a more quantized approach by a daily income whereby each layer is separated by one order of magnitude: Earning €2 per day, €20, €200, or €2000, etc.

Incremental changes in income such as doubling one’s salary won’t change our layer. Only a 1000% increase would justify graduating to the next level. But that type of offer can’t be rationalized by most of society. It raises fear, uncertainty, and doubt. The fantasy of a 10-fold increase in salary is compelling, but then insecurity sets in. “Do I have the skills for that type of job? What’s the catch? It’s too good to be true so it must be a scam!” For the average consumer moving to a higher layer is unfathomable.

We live with unwritten rules that adjacent socioeconomic layers don’t mix. Socializing between layers manifests insecurity. That’s why middle-class families aren’t invited to dinner parties at mansions, and so on. We stick with what we know and with whom we feel comfortable. Insecurity prevents a lower layer from vacationing with a higher layer because the economics is lopsided. One family is willing to pay €200 per night for a hotel room while the other wants a suite for €4000. The lower layer doesn’t see the point in paying $20,000 for a handbag when one for $100 would suffice. At the cash register, the lower layer feels inadequate while the other feels embarrassed.

In contrast, the contemplation of falling back to a lower layer also causes anxiety. “I can’t socialize with that layer! What if they pull me down to their level?” Snobbery is a classic form of insecurity. A lack of self-confidence doesn’t discriminate across income brackets.

Certainly, there are a select few who succeed in traversing layers. Some parents save money their entire life to send their children abroad for education, hoping they’ll break from their layer. Winning the lottery jumps layers even if years later they find themselves back where they started. More recently, the crypto generation has also accelerated incomes.

Regional dynamics also decide your socioeconomics. Talent may be identical in remote locations of the globe but drastically differ by income. The same skills in a different country may have a 10-fold discrepancy in salary. It’s one reason for global migration.

Modern society is shaped, in part, by three main motivators: Power, Fame, and Wealth. An obsessive desire to chase money, achieve higher social status, and acquire more stuff. An incessant need to perpetually climb the social ladder. It’s an endless competition with, “The Jones'”. If we succeed to reach a new layer, we never want to look back. This perpetuates impatience. “What’s my next hustle?” But material aspirations blind us from looking inward. Chasing power, fame, and wealth dilutes our journey to a truly emotional connection with our inner self.
