Success in modern society is measured by three core motivators: The acquisition of fame, fortune or power. Achieving one is considered a success. Two can reached by a few. But achieving all three is nearly impossible. Political, Economic, Social and Technological (i.e. PEST) constrain all motivators.

Moving to post-communist Prague in 1993 I saw firsthand how people didn’t have much. Communist doctrine dictates individual wealth as out of the question. There were also limits to acquiring power. Status was attained mainly through titles such as Dr. (i.e., doctor), Ing. (i.e., engineer), or JUDr. (i.e., lawyer). Achieving fame in the Iron Curtain was through politics, sports, or the entertainment industry. But power or fame didn’t equate to wealth by Western standards. Actors in Czechoslovakia were locally famous and poor in equal measure.

Without fame, power, or wealth, the focus was on the family unit. Brothers taking care of sisters. Older siblings take care of younger ones. Children take care of their elders. Families needed to stick together because neighbors would report you to the authorities if they heard anything bad said against the government. It was a regime fueled by fear, where anyone could be an informant.

All manner of fame, fortune, and power is now attainable by anyone with a smartphone.

Barriers to entry have been eliminated by social media.

By the end of the ’80s, computers had become mainstream, and at the beginning of the ’90s there was this new thing called the “Internet”. The Velvet Revolution from November 17th to December 29th Dec 1989 brought hope to Eastern Europe and a fresh start. It took a decade for the internet to kick into gear, even if it was through tap dripping modems, and the former Eastern block was ready to leap frog into this technological evolution. Then the 2000s introduced the world to social media.

All manner of fame, fortune, and power is now attainable by anyone with a smartphone. Barriers to entry have been eliminated by social media. Having a million followers on YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok is, in itself, currency. Influencers are now called content creators, and their activities translate to product endorsements and new “referral” revenue streams, driven by product endorsements, and other promotional tools. More than ever before, social media has created a generation of influencers who accumulate their fortune while sleeping.

Prioritize Love over Likes.

Unfortunately, our fixation on these core motivators has also diluted our ability to focus inward. Social media now fuels a generation of followers with chronic insecurity. Chasing Likes (i.e., 👍) has distracted us from nurturing our souls. An entire society doesn’t love themselves because they’re fixated on comparing looks, possessions, and wealth to standards that are unreachable. Fear Of Missing Out (i.e., FOMO) is now a epidemic. The spirit of competition has turned on its head: Instead of winning symbolizing, “being the best that you can be”, Generation Z are fixated on a fear of losing and feeling inconsequential.
