Society classifies men into two types: Alphas and Betas. Putting aside the debate as to whether these personalities are relevant today, a third category has recently emerged: the Sigma. In this post, I’ll explore the top ten behavioral traits of a Sigma male:

  1. Selective Social Interactions • Sigmas are considered the ‘lone wolves’ of the pack. They don’t fall into the traditional hierarchy of leader versus follower. They find comfort in solitude. For this reason, they have no problem declining social engagements if they don’t see its value. Sigmas don’t have issues with a Fear of Missing Out (i.e., FoMO).
  2. Circumventing Social Hierarchies • Sigmas resent cultures grounded in social hierarchies. They consider cast systems, aristocratic societies, and the superiority complex of generational wealth as dated. Everyone has the potential to succeed if given the right resources. A doctor, lawyer, or engineer is born in every socio-economic corner of the world. Everyone, regardless of their socio-economic origins should be given a chance to succeed..
  3. Resistance to Conformity • Sigmas don’t fear challenging the status quo. They see two types of people in the world: Those who follow rules, and those who create them. As a creator, Sigmas will recognize that rules are susceptible to change as the world evolves. They’re not purposely trying to be difficult but they have no issue with questioning authority. In a world of Beta-sheeps and Alpha-wolves Sigmas consider themselves equal to Alphas without a desire to lead. If a group lacks an Alpha, then a Sigma may step up. In the presence of an Alpha, the Sigma will step aside. An insecure Alpha might view a Sigma as a threat to their authority, but if an Alpha has confidence they may try to ally with them as their advisor.
  4. Non-People Pleaser • Alphas and Betas are forever competing with each other in the game of life but Sigmas don’t seek the approval of others nor compare themselves to them. Sigmas are only trying to be better than who they were yesterday.
  5. Mainstream Media SkepticismAs explained by Friedrich Nietzsche, society follows a herd mentality. Mainstream media easily manipulates sheep to their party line. Sigmas are aware of this bias so they try to seek different perspectives and formulate their own opinion. First and foremost they value their time, so spending any time listening to liars, conspiracy theories, government propaganda, or partisan-based news is a complete waste of time. They’re not trying to be rebellious. They’re only trying to seek the truth. As in science, their opinions will evolve when new and credible information is presented.
  6. A Different Lens • Sigmas see the world differently. They tend to look beyond the obvious and read between the lines. They see layers that are blind to Alphas and Betas. In a collective environment, they’ll assess the room beyond the social interactions and body language. They see layers of collective emotion indiscernible to others. Sigmas see the world from a birds-eye view, and will constantly analyze their surroundings.
  7. Non-Materialistic Minimalist • Sigmas are not owned by material possessions. They don’t chase money, they don’t live for money, and their life doesn’t revolve around financial gains. If they are successful, it’s because they have pursued their passions. Every possession, regardless of its value has a purpose. They admire what they own for their engineering and artistry and praise the intelligence invested in its creation.
  8. Invaluable Valuable Interactions • Sigmas hate small talk. They don’t require social interactions so if their time is invested in such things then it needs to be meaningful. Sigmas value people whom they trust and will not hesitate to close the door on toxicity. Their relationships are based on quality, not quantity.
  9. Different Thought Process • Sigmas trust their judgment and don’t follow societal norms. They’re not susceptible to peer pressure. Sigmas have their own compass and always choose their own path. They’ll spend hours analyzing themselves and past interactions as a means to better understand who they are and the world around them.
  10. Mysterious & Unpredictable • Alphas are acclimated to Betas respecting or fearing them, so they’re uneasy when Sigmas don’t react the same way. Alphas sometimes perceive this as weak because they find it odd when Sigmas won’t also peacock their ego. Alphas may also see Sigmas as a threat because they don’t understand them. This Fear of Uncertainty and Doubt (i.e., FUD) may expose an Alpha’s insecurities. Betas on the other hand may interpret weakness in a Sigma because of their perceived transparency. But their disclosures are calculated.

The categorization of personalities doesn’t remove our humanity, it’s an acknowledgment of our humanity.

There’s a segment of society that discounts the science of personality classification. They consider eight billion people to have eight billion distinct personalities. At the same time, they accept the categorization of every physical object in the world – rocks, food, chemicals, etc. To deny the personalities such as Alphas, Betas, or Sigmas, or any other form of categorization is a denial of science. The categorization of personalities doesn’t remove our humanity, it’s an acknowledgment of our humanity.
