I’ve always been an avid fan of technology, writing about HiFi, 4K UHD video, media streaming, crypto, and photography for much of my career. My digital fascination began in 1982 when the compact disc revolutionized the music industry. By the turn of the century, digital audio had exceeded the capabilities of the human ear. We arguably reached perfection in audio long ago, thanks to computing, but digital video hasn’t yet reached the human glass ceiling.

I remember speaking to a salesman at a camera store in the early 2000s. He pitched me on the premise that no one needs a camera higher than five megapixels (5 MP). He pointed to the average print at 9cm x 13cm (3.5” x 5”). At 300 dots per inch (i.e., dpi), this translates to a measly 1050 by 1500 pixels (or 1.6 MP). The average consumer doesn’t care about high megapixels or expensive lenses. In today’s smartphone world, everyone has advanced technology at their fingertips, whether they like it or not. However, professionals demand high color depth, stellar lens quality, depth of field control, joystick focus capabilities, and many other features not found in consumer products. Eventually, consumers enjoy professional features as economies of scale filter into the mainstream.

Technology enters the mainstream whether we like it or not. Digital Theater Systems, DTS-HD High-Resolution Audio supports 7.1-channel and 192 kHz, at 24-bit audio. Dolby Atmos offers a 3D audio experience by providing a more spatial and dynamic audio landscape. These standards are orders of magnitude of overkill, considering the average human can only hear up to 20 kHz. Regardless, these tracks are included in many Hollywood movies. Most consumers don’t even realize how much fidelity is reaching their senses.

Now that 4K UHD (Ultra High Definition) video is mainstream, the next transition is 8K UHD (i.e., with a resolution of 7680 × 4320). Undoubtedly, 16K UHD will follow, where each frame will be the equivalent to a 132 MP camera. Even smartphones like the Samsung S24 Ultra already have a 200MP camera. At the beginning of 2025, Canon announced its 410 MP CMOS sensor. All of these products are evidence of digital video evolving quicker than demand. But when it comes to desktop applications or movies, higher resolutions have diminishing returns. Transitioning from HD to 4K was noticeable, but 8K Ultra High Definition will be less obvious. Everything will depend on the applications that will push digital video forward.

When a consumer puts on a pair of virtual or augmented reality glasses, individual pixels can still be seen at 4K and even 8K. Extreme resolutions will play an important role in this space so that individual pixels will no longer be discernible. As for digital photography, professionals always strive to improve their craft. As sensor technology advances, lens quality, camera processors, and color depth must improve to ensure no bottlenecks in the photography supply chain. Our expectations evolve without realizing it. Just look at photos from the ‘90s. Most of them look out of focus.

Scientists have deduced that the human eye is capable of 576 million pixels at 60 frames per second. Although this seems excessive in the context of the entertainment industry, they are milestones to reach for bio-prosthetics. Once we create a digital eye at this resolution, we’ll have reached the visual glass ceiling that audio achieved at the turn of the 21st century.
