֍ 58 ֍ Crying Confidence
A friend I admire often asks me, “When was the last time you cried?” He’s not asking from a vantage point of weakness. He asks from a position of strength.
When a child cries, most view this as a moment of vulnerability and a sign of weakness. Children don’t have an established personality to react otherwise. When an adult has an emotional outburst, it’s interpreted as childish because it reminds them of their fragile youth. For this reason, many cultures indoctrinate a “suppress your emotions” and an “act your age” mantras, which leads to behavioral sterilization.
For the most part, adults won’t cry because it exposes their soul and unmasks their insecurities. Emotions are suppressed throughout adulthood through virtual walls created to prevent others from seeing their authentic self. It’s a mechanism to maintain a facade of strength, but it has the adverse effect of creating a society that lacks emotional intelligence.
The Nietzsche herd, embarrassed by an outburst of human emotion, is the embodiment of insecurity. They’re saying, “I would never do that because everyone would see who I truly am.” With over ninety percent of society lacking self-confidence, suppressing emotion becomes ingrained in social behavior. Those who see emotions as a weakness are unable to face their insecurities.
Crying is a sign of strength and confidence. Showing vulnerability is saying, “I’m letting you see my soul, because I’m strong enough to know you can’t hurt me.” That’s confidence at its core. The minority who see your empathy are the strong ones.
